GiGi
was brought to Wild at Heart Rescue in Mississippi. She was a great horned owl,
but she was also dying. She had a massive head trauma injury, likely from being
hit by a truck or automobile.
The
rescue’s founder, Missy Dubuisson, describes the situation:
“This
bird was one of the most critical we have ever taken care of. The fact that
this bird has lived is beyond comprehension.”
Amazingly,
GiGi was getting better. It was Douglas “Doug” Pojeky, aka the “birds of prey
whisperer” which had a lot to do with the owls recovery. Here’s what Missy had
to say about Doug’s involvement with the birds:
“In
all my years of working with birds of prey, I have never seen someone with such
a bond with these magnificent birds.” The trust between GiGi and Doug was
nothing short of amazing. The owl trusted him totally. Doug had to take a trip
to Michigan, and it wasn’t until he got back that the bond between the two was
more than they expected. GiGi was simply ecstatic about his return. She
actually started dancing! And then she sweetly rested her head on his shoulder.
And even hugged him!
Missy
was blown away by the witnessing of this experience and others Doug has had
with birds: “It literally brings tears to my eyes to watch him interact with
these birds. They absolutely know him and trust him. It’s the trust that you
see in her face.”
